A network of rural Wolof women in ten Senegalese villages are working together to create beautiful handcrafted baskets for export. Using locally grown cattail stalks and strips of plastic recycled from prayer mats, the women bring supplemental income to their households by weaving baskets between their daily duties. Since 1994 Leslie Mittelberg, founder of Swahili Imports, has been building a network of artisans across Africa. Swahili's partnerships center on fair and sustainable profit generation, artisan advancement, and modern, earth-friendly product development. |
