Zulugrass Bracelets

Wear a part of the earth on your arm everyday and help support the Maasai women of Kenya. The Leaky Collection has designed a collection of earth colored beads to commemorate Earth Day and help support artisans among their community in Kenya. The Maasai women harvest long, local grass, one blade at a time, that is dried and cut into bead-size pieces. The tiny grass beads are then dyed lovely hues and strung into necklaces and bracelets. Each bracelet set is made of four 26" strands of varying shades of complementary colors. These special sets of bracelets can be wrapped around the wrist or worn loose as necklaces.

Kenya
The Maasai are a pastoral group of people that live in Kenya and Tanzania. A drought that ended in 2001 devastated their pasture lands. Philip and Katy Leakey wanted to help their neighbors and provide work opportunities without changing their culture. Zulugrass jewelry employs the excellent beading abilities of the Maasai women, and uses grass, an available sustainable resource, as it's primary element. Now over 1400 hundred Maasai women are making Zulugrass while continuing their traditional lifestyle, and use their income to better their lives as they wish.
