Mexico
Makaua is a word that comes from the ancient Nahuatl language, meaning "the act of giving a hand". Their company is based on the idea of valuing every single hand who helps make their baskets, from cutting the palm leaves, to braiding and dyeing the strands, to sewing and shipping the product. Palm grows abundantly in the southern mountains of Mexico, and the leaves are harvested without killing the plants. Since pre-Hispanic times, the people of the region have used this natural fiber to make baskets and hats, and passed this technique down through generations. Makaua translates this traditional craft into contemporary products for the international home.
